Celebrating Alaska’s history means honoring the resilient individuals whose stories shaped the Last Frontier across generations. For nearly a century, American artist O. Scott McDaniel captured that spirit through thousands of paintings that bring Alaska’s people, landscapes, and culture vividly to life.

On June 26, 2026, what would have been his 100th birthday, the public is invited to experience this remarkable artistic journey during a special centennial exhibition presented by the O. Scott McDaniel Art Foundation at the Anchorage Museum from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Known for his expressive impressionistic style, McDaniel created more than 3,000 original works spanning a wide range of mediums including oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, charcoal, silk, and palette knife painting. His artwork is celebrated for its powerful portrayals of Alaska’s rugged wilderness, dramatic coastlines, towering mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and Native culture.

Otis Scott McDaniel was born on June 26, 1926, in New Lebanon, Ohio. His lifelong passion for drawing, painting, and travel, ultimately lead to a body of work that today stands among the great visual treasures of American and Alaskan art.

McDaniel left behind an extraordinary artistic legacy that preserves a rich and beautiful chapter of Alaska’s history. From the majestic presence of Denali and the shimmering glow of the aurora borealis to the rugged beauty of Alaska’s coastlines and remote communities, his paintings continue to inspire wonder, nostalgia, and appreciation for the spirit of the North.

Guests attending the June 26 celebration will have the opportunity to view rare original works, learn more about McDaniel’s life and artistic journey, and participate in a special silent auction featuring select original paintings. A limited-edition commemorative print will also be available, with proceeds supporting the Lahaina, Hawaii recovery project following the devastating fire that destroyed an historic boarding house McDaniel once painted on commission.

Join the O. Scott McDaniel Art Foundation for an unforgettable evening celebrating 100 years of art, history, and Alaska’s enduring spirit.
